INTERPRISE Selects Cypress Communications for Hosted VoIP Solution
"Cypress' C4 IP solution is an important part of our corporate business continuity strategy with its ability to provide uninterrupted voice and data communications. Since C4 IP is an off-premise hosted solution--unlike other solutions we evaluated--our business will be protected should we experience any sort of calamity. We'll be able to quickly reroute our communications and be up and running, business as usual, in no time," said Graham Easterling, IT director for INTERPRISE.
"As we discussed INTERPRISE's communication goals, the importance of business continuity planning became quickly apparent. As a professional services company, employee availability to clients is paramount to INTERPRISE; downtime is not an option. Mobility is also key since many of INTERPRISE's staff are required to be on-site for client design projects. Cypress has been providing managed desktop communications for 20 years, so our legacy as an industry veteran, with the experience, staff and innovative technology to keep our customers' communications up and running was a good match for their business needs," said Frank Grillo, executive vice president of enterprise services, Cypress Communications. "With C4 IP, not only can Cypress provide a secure, reliable, redundant communications solution, but we can also provide productivity-enhancing VoIP mobility and collaboration features."
Because the business intelligence is located on the Cypress network and not in INTERPRISE's office, the company can remain operational no matter what happens at their physical location. C4 IP's cutting-edge, user-friendly Web portal and remote access tools enable them to run their business from a client's office or any other temporary location that has an Internet connection.
"With C4 IP from Cypress, we were able to benefit from more functionality than if we had purchased a premises-based phone system. We anticipate that C4 IP's inherent flexibility will facilitate remote work environments, making it easy for field employees and teleworkers to stay connected to the office. With presence information for each employee, we'll instantly know who's available. And C4 IP's collaboration tools--such as video calling, Web conferencing and file sharing--will facilitate communications between our office and field employees, and ultimately improve our productivity," Easterling continued.
C4 IP is an enterprise-class, hosted VoIP solution that enables multi-location companies to communicate seamlessly throughout the enterprise. Scalable and adaptable, C4 IP is a dynamic communications solution that streamlines and improves communications, resulting in a more productive and efficient enterprise.
C4 IP features a softphone, allowing the user to make and receive telephone calls from their PC without the use of a traditional telephone. It also integrates with the user's Cypress-provided IP desktop phone and acts as the interface to the multimedia functionality of C4 IP--presence, chat, point-to-point video calling, file sharing, collaboration, and Web conferencing.

WiMax is more suited to city size
WiMax or the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access is a telecommunication technology which has a longer range, covering many kilometres. It uses a licenced or an unlicenced bandwidth to deliver a point-to-point connection to the Internet. The difference between WiMax and Wi-Fi is often likened to the one between a cellphone and a cordless phone.
Delhi’s size makes it imperative for any plan to e-enable the entire city to make use of WiMax, whereas WI-Fi is good for smaller cities.
"For Wi-Fi, one needs to buy a communicator and as many receptors as there are terminals, and the reach would depend on the strength of the communicator. WiMax is much more advanced and the speed can go up to 9.2 Mbps. The user pays according to speed and volume. It can be ideal for locations like the Commonwealth Games Village," said an official.
Diptorup Chakraborty, principal analyst in the IT company Gartner, said from Mumbai: "Wi-Fi connectivity is being done in Pune and Bangalore in India and several other cities across the world. A 100% coverage may not be practically feasible, but it works somewhat like the mobile phone network. The signal may be strong in some places and weak in others depending on the kind of infrastructure the service provider offers."
Meanwhile, the IT department official said that with talks of mobile companies supporting 3G services, the GPRS network too can be of great use. However, one hitch in the wider use of WiMax technology is that certain bandwidths are still with the defence ministry. Telecom regulator Trai is in talks with the ministry to "free" those bandwidths.

Corning Inc. Develops Ultra-Flexible Fiber Optics
The new fiber is approximately 100 times more flexible than the standard fiber.
Fiber Optics systems are dominating the telecommunication industry today. As compared to the conventional system, Fiber Optics are less expensive, thin, safe, flexible and can carry higher capacity with minimal loss of signal. Ideally suited to carry digital signals, more and more telecom sectors prefer to use Fiber optics and therefore replace their telecom lines. The technology in Fiber Optics is the usage of glass threads to transmit data. So, there is always the risk for fragility and splicing. With the advent of Ultra flexible fiber optics, Corning has created a revolution in the telecommunication and the internet industry. The ultra-flexible technology allows the fiber to be bent with virtually no signal loss.
"This is a game-changing technology for telecommunications applications," said Corning's president, Peter Volanakis. "We have developed an optical fiber cable that is as rugged as copper cable but with all of the bandwidth benefits of fiber."
Corning said the improvements will enable carriers to economically offer high-speed Internet, voice and high-definition TV service to virtually all high-rise buildings.
In standard fiber, the light signal leaks out at bends or turns and "with two 90-degree turns, the signal is lost," Corning spokesman Dan Collins said in a statement. "This design relies on nanostructures that serve as a mirror or a guardrail, and as the fiber is turned or bent, the light doesn't leak out. We have wrapped the fiber around a ball point pen and it retains its effectiveness."
There are more than 25 million high-rise apartment homes in the United States and more than 680 million worldwide.
